Fr. Randy Michael Cuevas was appointed 33rd Pastor of Ascension of Our Lord parish at the age of 35 in July 1992 by Bishop of Baton Rouge, Stanley J. Ott.

He is the eldest of 3 children of Sidney and Shirley Cuevas of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. His younger sister Sheree C. Daniel is a registered nurse in Baton Rouge, and his younger brother Leslie J. is an attorney in Phoenix, Arizona.

 Fr. Cuevas is an alumnus of St. Aloysius School in Baton Rouge (Class of ’70), St. Joseph Cathedral Prep High School in Baton Rouge (Class of ’74), University of St. Thomas, Houston, Texas (Class of ’78, B.A., Political Science), Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas (Angelicum University), Rome, Italy (Class of ’81, S.T.B., Theology), Pontifical Athenaeum of Sant’Anselmo, Rome, Italy (Class of ’83, S.T.L., Dogmatic-Sacramental Theology).  He is an alumnus of St. Mary’s Seminary, Houston, Texas, and the Pontifical North American College, Vatican City.

Fr. Cuevas was ordained on June 26, 1982, and served as Associate Pastor at Ascension of Our Lord Parish in Donaldsonville from 1983-1985, St. Jean Vianney Parish in Baton Rouge from 1985-1987, and St. Mary Parish, New Roads, from 1987-1989. He served as Pastor of St. Margaret Parish, Albany, LA, and its mission St. Thomas the Apostle, Springfield, LA, from 1989 to 1992. 

in 1990 he was appointed chaplain of St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Hammond, LA, and Dean (Vicar Forane) of the Northwest Deanery of the Diocese of Baton Rouge, positions he held until 1992.  Since 1990, he has been a member of the Building Review Board of the Diocese of Baton Rouge. In October 1992, he was appointed Superintendent and Chaplain of the Ascension Catholic Interparochial School system.

From 1985-1990 he served as Diocesan Chaplain for Scouting, and from 1990 to the present served/serves on the Executive Board of the National Catholic Committee on Scouting, and from 1997-1999 as National Catholic Chaplain of the Boy Scouts of America. From 1999-2001 he was chairman of the International Committee of the National Catholic Committee on Scouting.

Fr. Cuevas has served in the United States Air Force Reserve since 1979 as a Chaplain Candidate and Chaplain. He has been attached for training at Torrejon Air Base, Spain, Rhein-Main Air Base, Germany, Tempelhof Air Base, Germany, England Air Force Base, LA, Keesler Air Force Base, MS, and on the staff of the Command Chaplain at the Headquarters, Air Education and Training Command, Randolph Air Force Base, Texas.  He presently holds the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, and serves on the staff of Major General L.K. Potter, Chief of the Air Force Chaplain Service, Washington, D.C
